So you want to know how to draw Pokemon. I guess so if you are here! And what could be a better start that Pikachu, the protagonist of the famous series! Drawing Pokemons is very simple.
All of them are based on very basic and elementary shapes and once you have learned how to break them down into these basic shapes,
drawing them is going to be piece of cake!
With this tutorial we’ll start to train our eyes with Pikachu which is basically composed of a circle, the head, and an elongated ellipses underneath to form the body. But to start with an even simpler approach I’ll ask you to draw a square and a rectangle that we’ll use to establish the proportions of the body. Let’s get started.
[quote_box_center]As an Electric-type Pokemon, Pikachu can store electricity in its cheeks and release it in lightning-based attacks[/quote_box_center]
Once you have drawn the square and the rectangle you have established a solid framework around which to build this character. The head of Pikachu will be inside the square while the whole body will be within the rectangle.
[quote_box_center]Pikachu are small, mouse-like Pokemon that have short, yellow fur with brown markings covering their backs and parts of their tails. They have black-tipped, pointy ears and red circles on their cheeks, which are said to contain “electrical sacs”.Their tails are shaped in the form of a lightning bolt[/quote_box_center]
Now draw the two big black eyes, two circles approximately on the horizontal midline of the face. Starting from the outer ridge of the eye then follow the red arrows to guess the angles of the geometrical mouth. Once this is done draw the small triangular nose half way between mouth and eyes. Easy, isn’t it? I told you this was going to be a fun and easy way to learn how to draw pokemon.
From the previous sketch I have moved to this one just by adding a few simple details. The long ears, the arms and feet and a simple curved line that will help drawing the jagged tail.
If you have followed my instructions you should have approximately the same drawing and now it’s a good time to clean it up a little bit. Erase the construction lines (the square and rectangle) and work on the roundness of the cheeks and body. remember it must be cute to be a pokemon!
[quote_box_center]The Pokedex, in several games in the series, states that Pikachu forage for berries. In lieu of climbing trees, they use small electrical bolts to release the berries and apples from the tree, roasting them at the same time[/quote_box_center]
The tail can be tricky. To tackle it, just draw an elliptical outline and then draw the tail inside it. The drawing is almost over!
In the last step, as usual, clean your drawing using your favorite eraser, thicken some of the body lines to enhance the figure contour and voilat, you have learned how to draw pokemon… well at least Pikachu with this simple lesson.
I have taken this drawing to next level and I have digitally inked it and colored with Photoshop. Here is the result. If you want you can download the coloring page of this drawing from the coloring page section of the site!
