How to draw Batman – Welcome to this new tutorial of the Drawing Factory. This tutorial will be about drawing the famous DC character Batman and we’ll focus here on the face and hence the mask.
We will try to capture in this drawing the dark flavor of this character so we will be inspired by the more modern interpretations of the notorious superhero.
Lets get started.
So the first thing you want to do is to start sketching the basic outline of a male face. There are many tutorials on this website that will help you drawing a face and position the facial features correctly. Just have a look around. Try for example the series of tutorial on how to draw a face or the video tutorial of how to draw a male face, the super-hero tipe.
So I won’t go in much detail here. Start sketching the outline of a face and position the basic features. Remember neck has to be big and masculine.
How to draw Batman – lets Start
Now lets define the eyebrow line and the nose line. For this particular mask you want to draw the eyebrow line at an angle, like showed in the picture below.
Then position the nose line at a comfortable distance from the brow line. Distance should be just right. Too long or too short and the face will look strange and weird.
At this point we start drawing the lines that will guide us to draw the mask of batman. Using the nose line as a starting point draw two diagonal lines from the tip of the nose going up to the sides of the head.
The two lines are roughly parallel to the brow lines. Also you want to sketch in the mouth at this point. Positioning the mouth is critical and will suggest the degree of inclination of the head forward. The closer the mouth to the nose the more tilted forward the head will appear.
How to draw Batman – Nose Line
Time to draw the nose and the sides of the mask (or hood if you want). If you have drawn things as described so far drawing these two parts should be easy.
The nose is defined by two simple straight lines to form a triangular shape. To define the sides of the mask you have just to trace two lines going from approximately the middle point of the top part to the jaw point. Just have a look at the picture below.
How to draw Batman – Defining the mask
So far we have laid the foundations to draw accurately the batman now it is time to start polishing a bit our drawing! Start removing the lines in excess and that are not supposed to be on Batman’s face.
Also start positioning the eyes! Very important facial feature to draw a convincing batman!
Spend a bit of value time refining the shape and position of the eyes. I have drawn them triangular but they may also be more rounded. I have also added the bat-ears at this point.
How to draw Batman – Completing the mask
From this point on you can continue polishing and refining your drawing. Start adding minor details to better define the drawing like the human-ears that are evident from the hood. I have also noticed here that the mouth is slightly too small. A good guide for this is given by the position of the eyes as indicated by the green lines.
So in the next drawing I will redraw the mouth slightly larger.
You might also have noticed that I have changed the shape of the neck. The new one seemed better suited to this face and expression and formed a more continuous line with the face.
Have you noticed the mouth is larger? Do not you think is better this way? I have added few more very important details. The first is the chin pad or if you want the chin part of the hood. The second are two lines defining the visible part of the face.
How to draw Batman – Making it tough
We are getting really close to the finalized drawing of batman now. Let your hand loose now and start working on small details. Define the smallest parts and make the fundamental lines stronger to give the drawing a bit more depth.
Work around the eyes to emphasize them and show the thickness of the mask by making these lines thicker. I have also added a general shadowy pattern all over the mask to define roughly areas of shadows and lights.
Increase the depth of shadowing now to finish off your drawing and go on until you are happy with the result and with the level of finish. I really hope this tutorial has been helpful and guided you through the process of drawing a better batman.
GREAT tutorial. The chin guard and the pointed nose really solidifies everything. I’ve been looking around that this is the only Batman face tutorial that is clear and that I am able to use. Thanks again.
Hi Sandie, I am glad it helped! What was with this you found better or easier than other tutorials?
