This month contest is:
Invent and draw your superhero!
by Vincenzo
You'll learn the basic guidelines to draw this funny character and to color it to perfection.
Learn how to draw Spongebob is an easy endeavor. It boils down to start laying the basic shapes that form his body and limbs.
Start by drawing an elongated rectangle (the body) and add two sticks to the sides and two to the bottom of it. The small little balls represent the main joints.

Draw two big circles one on each side of the rectangle as shown in the picture then divide the rectangle in three rough sections. The bottom section will contain the shirt and pants of our funny character.
Do not need to be precise in this phase on the contrary. Stay loose with your pencil and proportion and experiment un till you come up with an overall shape that pleases you.
Let's move on with the step two of how to draw Spongebob!
SpongeBob is a sea sponge, but he resembles a kitchen sponge. He has large blue eyes, many holes appearing all around his body and a mouth with prominent front buck teeth. He typically wears a white shirt with a red tie and brown square trousers, hence his family name "SquarePants"

Let's sketch in now the main elements of the face. As you see the face takes almost the whole surface of the rectangle. Draw into the eyes the pupils, two small black circles and be careful in placing them. their position will contribute to the final expression of Spongebob.
Draw the mouth, the teeth and nose as shown. Still maintain a fluid approach, things might change along the way. Do not be tempted to start detailing the face yet. We want to see if the drawing works first.

Here you can start adding secondary shapes that start delineating Spongebob better. The short sleeves, the tie and short pants, the prominent eyelashes.
Start adding thickness to the arms and legs until you are satisfied and sketch in the hands and shoes. See how he looks different with many details in place?
This is a critical turning point where we decide more subtle characteristic of our drawing like the expression of the character and the general mood of the illustration. See how adding the irises has really changed his expression.
SpongeBob is a fry cook at the Krusty Krab restaurant, at which he has won employee of the month many times!
Look at our tutorial about how to draw eyes if you want to know more about the iris.

If you are happy with your composition so far, now it's time to start adding details!
I have slightly moved the eyes around a bit to play with the expression of SpongeBob, for example. I have added the undulations which are characteristic of his spongy body and I have detailed legs and arms, feet and hands a bit more.
While still using the 2H pencil I have added a bit of darkness in the mouth and on the shoes. I have also enhanced the overall contrast of the image by going over the profile with the pencil a few times.
The first concept sketch portrayed the character as wearing a red hat with a green base and a white business shirt with a tie. SpongeBob's look gradually progressed to brown pants that was used in the final design
Let's proceed to the step 5 of how to draw SpongeBob!

At this point might be a good idea to change your pencil and using a 2B instead of a 2H. this will give you more values to play with and enhance the contrast of the image even more.
Just take a look at how faint the picture 1 is compared to this.
Nothing particularly fancy here to be said. The great job you did during the setup phase, where we laid down the main shapes and studied the overall look is paying off. Adding details now on a solid backbone is just plain fun and almost nothing can really go wrong!

Wow this is a big step, isn't it? This tutorial is really about how to draw SpongeBob and not how to ink/scan/clean the drawing/color him. So I am going to go fast on these last two steps. But do not worry, I'll examine these step in a specific tutorial later!
Once you have inked you image (I used a Staedtler 0.4mm for the job), you can clean and scan your drawing.

and there you have it! Here you have a great drawing of SpongeBob colored using a free drawing software. I won't enter into the details of coloration here but it's a very basic coloration done digitally. As you can see I have chosen SpongeBob basic colors, added the spongy holes and it was pretty much finished!
