How to draw a monkey

by Vincenzo and Lucia

Welcome to How to draw a monkey. - Hello my friends in this tutorial we'll se how to draw a lovable macaque monkey from start to finish! So for all monkey lovers out there, this is for you!

Aside from humans (genus Homo), the macaques are the most widespread primate genus, ranging from northern Africa to Japan. Twenty-two macaque species are currently recognized, and they include some of the monkeys best known to non-zoologists, such as the Rhesus Monkey, Barbary Ape.

Although several species lack tails, and their common names therefore refer to them as apes, these are true monkeys, with no greater relationship to the true apes than any other Old World monkeys.

How to draw a monkey - Let's get started!

Let's start by drawing the usual few initial construction lines to position head and body of the monkey. Also draw a line that will serve as a foundation to draw the branch where the monkey is sitting.

it's important to have a look at the anatomy of a macaque monkey before trying to draw one of them. They have long arms and slightly shorter legs with long feet. The shoulders are close to the head and not very far apart from each other.

Sketch in the arms and the hind legs and do not go into details a this stage. We just want to lay down the basic elements of the body of the monkey and establish the general pose.

At this point you can start sketching in the face and position the tail of the macaque. It's handy to think at the face as if they were wearing a mask as the rest of the head is covered by fur. Ears are locate backward and up on the head.

The tail is long and strong as they use it (well at least some of the species) as a fifth arm to grapple onto branches and help climbing trees! So when you draw the tail draw it with a large base and a rounded end.

You can erase the construction lines at this point. As the body is mainly covered in fur from now on it will be a matter of rendering the fur effect on the body surface. Obviously after drawing the face!

You probably need a reference image to draw correctly the face of the monkey. Jump on Google and search for some images, it will be of help. Eyes are small and frontal and the snout is pronounced. Nostrils are small and oblique.

As usual try to render the fur not by drawing many single hairs with pencil strokes but by creating the illusion that the fur is there. Work on the siluette of the figure and add lines there and only a few lines within the perimeter of the body.

Slowly proceed from the head to the arms adding fur and refining the hands.

Finally move to the hind legs and feet detailing them and adding the right amount of fur.

As you work across the surface of the drawing try to emphasize important areas like the face adding a bit of shadow. When adding shadows in a surface with fur remember to add it by drawing thicker hairs and following the direction of the fur.

Work at the branch and add details to it while keeping an eye to the detail of the monkey. Remember you want your principal subject to have the most detail. Congratulations you did a fantastic drawing of a macaque monkey!
