Drawing cartoons requires skill, dedication and an unusual mindset. Drawing cartoons is very different from natural drawing or realistic drawing because it aims at capturing the essence of a character or situation through extreme simplification and often through the utilization of irony and sarcasm.
This is the reason, at the Drawing Factory, consider the art of drawing with a cartoon style something to be taken really seriously. And we are very serious about doing silly things the right way!
As you might already have read in drawing basics, simplification is an essential skill for a person passionate about drawing but is a skill very difficult to master.
The reason is that to be able to simplify you need to be able to see through the apparent complexity of your subject; to see the basic shapes that form a character or an object you want to draw. This might seem easy but it is less intuitive than you think in particular when you are challenged by very complex compositions and characters.
However, practicing the art of simplification is something fun to do and once mastered, drawing cartoons will feel like a natural consequence of it.
So the good news is, you can learn cartoon drawings! And I am not talking about just being able to copy someone else's drawing; I am talking about creating you own cartoon drawings!
