by Lucia

With "ten painting tips for novice artists" I wanted to focus on you who are approaching the art of painting for the first time. If you are searching for quick ideas and guidelines to know where to start, this is the right place.

Painting can be great but also frustrating at times, particularly when you are starting off and the results are not satisfying.

Please be patient! take a deep breath and go on reading the ten painting tips below. And remember that the big painting masters started from scratch like you!

1. Choose the best technique according to the result you want

Are you looking for a vivid effect or a softer one? Are you aiming at adding many details or just painting wide color shades? Every technique has its own strengths and limits, consider it before starting and choose the one that will allow you to match your vision.

2. Get inspired by the great artists

Before start painting yourself, dedicate a bit of time observing and studying the paintings of other artists and try to understand why they work.

3. Envision the finished painting

Colors near to each other interact strongly creating a variety of different effects. Try out your color palette before starting. You can use a spare piece of paper or a computer. They mustn't be precise but give you a solid idea on how your colors are going to look together.

4. Choose the right materials

The quality of the art materials is paramount. If you are just starting out ask other artists or even at your favorite artist store for suggestions and ideas on materials right for your level. Do not be too cheap though. Even if some materials can be expensive, cheap materials can dramatically affect the quality of your work.

5. Work in a well lit room

Colors appear different under different illuminations. Work in a room or ambient with plenty of natural light. It'll be good for your health too :)

Do not start with a "Monnalisa" project. You'll get frustrated fast. Start from simple subject instead and a palette of few colors. Even monochromatic shading is not a bad idea. You'll learn much faster.

7. Do not rush

If you think your painting is done put it aside and take it again in three days. You'll be able to see defects and things you might want to improve.

8. Store all your paintings

It'll be useful to see your progress and study your strengths and weaknesses.

9. Experiment constantly new graphic solutions

Who said that the shadow is black, the sky blue and the sun yellow? Think always out of the box and never be fully satisfied.

10. Persevere

It doesn't matter if your first paintings do not excite you. If you like painting and drawing keep doing it and you'll definitely get better at it!
