Caricature drawing is tough! Whoever thinks it's easier to draw caricature faces compared to realistic ones is plain wrong!. The two arts (realistic and caricature) share many features and are very different from each other at the same time.

I would say that if you are good at drawing realistic faces you have at least a good background that will help you to start drawing caricatures. The opposite is not necessarily true.

The caricaturist has to capture the resemblance to the subject of the caricature using few lines while at the same time deforming his/her face in a controlled way and all this while trying to portrait the essence of the subject!

Damn hard I'd say! However not all hope is lost and we are here to try and make you a better caricature artist (or so we hope!).

There are many things to consider while drawing a caricature however it is essential to learn how to look properly at your subject. This holds true with realistic drawing as well but it is of uttermost importance with caricatures.

Looking properly means being able to visually dissect the face of the subject to extract relevant details to use in the drawing. Details like the shape of the eyes or of the head; size of the mouth and chin; size of the nose, ears and how all these features are interrelated.

While observing your subject you should be abe to figure out important facial features (those that make that person recognizable) and discard those who would be just clutter and that are not crucial to portrait the essence of the subject.

The basic trick

An easy suggestion could be: try to look for details which are odd or out of the ordinary in a face and emphasize them. Does your subject has a slightly elongated face? Make it like an horse face! Does he/she has a slightly bulging nose? Make it huge! You get the point.

But, hey, wait a sec! What if the guy I want to portrait has a perfect face with no evident asymmetries or peculiarities? Well here is when experience and ability to look come into play.

There is no such thing as "perfect" face. All faces have some peculiarity we might not consciously pick up but our brain uses to identify that face if we see it again.

With practice is easier and easier to pick up small facial details and use them to make gorgeous drawing! So never stop practicing!

I'll leave you now to the tutorial in this section that should treat the argument in detail and help you learning this beautiful art!
